From its inception, Rank Ensemble has taken as its mandate to explore the grey area of contemporary music which lies between improvisation and composition, seeking out contexts which range from free improvisation, to contemporary works which involve elements of improvisation, or which grant otherwise expanded roles to the performers.

At first glance, there is little common ground to be found between the notation-bound strictures of contemporary composition, and the supposedly unbounded spontaneity of free improvisation. Manoeuvring such an uneasy alliance poses a formidable challenge to the willing composer.

Rank is thus extremely happy to have the opportunity this season to present several new and recent works by composers who have taken on this challenge. On October 4 we will be presenting works by Simon Steen-Andersen and Stefan Prins, two exceptional composers who have forged their own approaches to the expanded contexts of contemporary music, and have followed their own individual paths through to extraordinary results..

These works are powerful examples of works which do not shy away from these crises and questions of the 21st-century musical landscape. We hope we are up to the challenges, playful but demanding, that these composers have placed before us. Welcome!

Simon Steen-Andersen: Run Time Error

Run Time Error feat. Rank Ensemble is a location specific video-performance. The video material will be produced during the  three days before the concert at Musiikkitalo. There are three main dogmas for the project: Only objects and instruments found at the location can be used, each object or instrument can only be used once, and each sound/action must have an immediate point of association with it’s neighboring sounds/actions. The objects are organized along with Rank Ensemble members on a route going from the stage of the concert hall through backstage areas, hallways and corridors of the Musiikkitalo. The space becomes an equivalent to time and playing through the composition will thus make concrete the commonly used musical metaphor “moving through time”. For this concert we will make two compositions and record the performances on video. At the concert these videos will time-manipulated in a two-part system controlled live with two joysticks. A performance with the performance. The first route will be shown as a video-performance alone. With the second route the setup will be used as an instrument, engaging in an improvisation with the Rank Ensemble.

Stefan Prins: Infiltrationen

“Infiltrationen” was originally written for 4 electric guitars and live-electronics in 2009.

In Infiltrationen there are three layers of musical material that infiltrate eachother continuously: the actions performed by the musicians, the prerecorded 4-channel tape (generated using analogue mixing-table feedback-techniques in which several signals infiltrate eachother) and a live-electronics part performed on a homemade digital instrument by a fifth musician.

“Infiltrations” are even more present on another level: the infiltrations of technology and technology-based decisionmaking on human (inter)action and vice versa – a subject that is very important to me, not only in a musical context. In Infiltrationen the “score” is being generated in real-time on computerscreens – every performer has a laptop in front of him. Whenever a performer wants a new playing-instruction he hits the spacebar of his laptop, and since the computers are connected to eachother through a network, the change made on one computer immediately has consequences for the playing instructions on all the other computers. Although a clear musical evolution has been preprogrammed on a macro-temporal level in these playing-instructions, the performers (almost) never know in advance which will be the next instruction. This makes the musicians masters and servants of the technology at the same time.

In this version, the Rank Ensemble will perform this piece with amplified acoustical instruments instead of the original electric guitars.

AN EVENING OF ELECTROACOUSTIC IMPROVISATION

A group of free improvisers from Helsinki gather together to play in
different formations combining electronic and acoustic instruments. The
musicians featured are:

Silakka radio listeners, A Happy New yEAR 2011! Greetings from sun-shinning Tokyo. Do you know the above fish? Officially called Tetraodontidae, but also famous as balloonfish. In Finnish, Pallokala and in Japanese, FUGU. As you might know, it is very poisonous and kills every year many people who ate it. It needs licensed professional cook. But it is one of the most delicious fishes. Of course without hesitation we went to try and indeed it was fantastic. But here is video before tasting it. Poor fish, sorry.
