OK, here it is. And I am sorry that Ville Leinonen & Majakan Soittokunta ( I was at the radio station doing live show), Pekko Käppi and the last band, Kiila are missing.
The short HD video (one minute video clip of the each musician/band) documentary from the other sound of Finland, the Finnish experimental scene curated by Juuso Paaso at the FLOW Festival August 13 – 15, 2010.
Shot, Edited and Uploaded by the Silakka Radio Show (that means me, Shinji).
Have a look! (Don’t forget to watch them in HD 720p!)
The day 1. August 13, Friday (yes, 13 Friday!)
Sorry, the last band of the day 1, Rapa & Roksette Rock N Roll Spectacle is missing. They were so crazy that I forgot to take video!
For the experimentalists You have a great chance to listen to Finnish experimental scene gorgeously lined up during the FLOW Festival. This year’s curator is Juuso Paaso. Check the program here. I got luckily a press pass and am coming to do very short video shoot for each musicians, that would be uploaded on this web site later.
Dear worldwide PODCASTING listeners of the Silakka Radio Show,
The show for the Autumn season 2010 starts on Sunday, August 8 at 5pm as scheduled. However I regret to tell you that I stop podcasting and instead broadcast LIVE on air only. I have been thinking about the problem of copyright that restricts my selection of music a lot, thus the program structure of the show. Many people told me, Shinji, you must be stupid, you are going to lose many worldwide audience. I know of course, and I have no idea how many listeners there are in Helsinki region listening especially LIVE via radio. Probably a few or 10… Everything is heading towards GLOBALization, trying to reach as many people as possible by using global Internet connectivity, and now I am going to the opposite direction!
But I have many interesting musics which are copyright protected and which I would very much like to share with the listeners. And then I thought why not being and what’s wrong being pure LOCAL? Probably there are, around the world, many people, radio stations, podcasters that are doing just like me, introducing local experimental music and local scenes. So why not I should concentrate more on Helsinki, and Finland local scenes for the local, live radio lovers.
Someday in future, if there would be a chance for LIVE feed(live netcasting) to the Internet (Probably LÄHIRADIO would do it someday?), I would surely open the show to the Internet again (but of course LIVE only).
HOWEVER, I would keep this radio show website, and I would put new information, what is happening on the local scene and occasionally put my thoughts on experimental music and sound arts, etc. with some recordings or video recordings. Just like a BLOG or Video LOG news site. I would plan to develop this site with the other experimental musicians and sound artists worldwide, like an open FORUM. So keep following the website!
And finally, Come to Helsinki to listen to my radio show LIVE! Thanks.
Today’s radio show features two interesting artists: Pleasure to Introduce 1) Matija Schellander from Wien, and 2) the artist duo, Tommi Grönlund & Petteri Nisunen from Helsinki.
And the newest release, “old girl, old boy” by rdeča raketa, a duo with Maja Osojnik from MOSZ records. Release date – april 15th (casette). http://www.mosz.org/
Today, Live studio guest, Janne Nummela. Welcome to SILAKKA Radio Show!
He is a graduate of acoustic laboratory of Helsinki University of Technology and poet, musician and currently busy with his paintings. True experimental multi-artist.
Today I will do an experiment: I play BAZTERRAK (Enrike Hurtado)’s LOOPS, 1 hour 20 minutes music “installation” from the year 2008, and at the same time I will read John Cage’s statement on EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC from his book SILENCE, that was printed in the brochure accompanying Geroge Avakian’s recording of my twenty-five-year retrospective concert at Town Hall, New York in 1958.
…. What is the balance between music and my speech so that you can understand the meaning of the text I am reading and at the same time you can enjoy music and even its detail. Is this really possible? Or our concentration works only for one target switching the focus between my speech and music?
Note: Bazterrak’s loops would be released from a netlabel Larraskito (http://www.xedh.org/larraskito/) soon. Of course without my reading of Cage. Keep eye on it and DO GET IT!
Today I play the recording of SORTIE, Tommi Keränen/Topias Tiheäsalo/Jari Kaukua, who visited NMA, a series of concerts called NEW MUSIC ACADEMY that I produced during 2004 – 2005 at Sibelius Academy.
SORTIE first played some pages from Cornelius Cardiew’s Treatise (1963.67) and then free improvisation. Total 37 minutes peaceful, quiet, but lots of energy inside.
ATTENTION: I am very sorry that due to malfunction of the computer that is supposed to record today’s show, there is NO podcasting for today’s show. Instead I put the mp3 file of music I played today. The first 17, or 18 minutes is excerpts from Cornelius Cardiew’s Treatise (1963.67), then the rest free improvisation by SORTIE. Enjoy!
